My Love of Reading!

If you know me well at all, then you know I LOVE to read!

......HAHAHAHAHA!! Ok, so obviously you don't know me at all if you believed that. It may look that way if you were to see my fairly new bookshelf I bought to hold all my books that were in and on my nightstand OR the book cabinet in the girls rooms with a lot of my childhood books. I love books!! Really, that part is true. I enjoy going to the library and looking books up and reading the back cover. Most of the time I think a book sounds really interesting and I really do want to read it. I even go as far as to check it out and take it home. Place it on my nightstand or the table here it will be convenient to grab when I have a few minutes to read a page or two. It's the actual "sit down and read it" part that I have a hard time with. Now don't get me wrong, I know that may have come across as though I am a mover and don't like to sit down leading to my lack of reading because I can't sit long enough to read. Let me clarify, I LOVE to sit down too! It's the actually reading part. The first couple of pages of a new book are usually pretty good, but then I start getting sleepy or daydreaming about other things and realize I read like 5 pages and do not know what any of them said. Do you know how many times I have read the first half of a book? If you count all the times I have read the first half of a book, then I could consider myself to have read LOTS of books in my life. I may not know how they ended, but I sure have the beginning down pat. I mean by the time I re-read the first half of the book, I am bored with it and ready to move on to something else.

I will say though, now that both of the girls are in school and reading is emphasized so strongly, I do read more. Henry and Mudge and Junie B. Jones are some really good books. I have read several ALL the way through as a matter of fact. How impressive is that?

My interest and desire for reading has increased over the last year or so. My actual reading has not though. But I think about the freedom that comes with reading. It amazes me how much you gain from reading. There are tons of benefits. I mean if you can't read, then the simplest things are either impossible or at the least difficult. Can you imagine getting something in the mail that is supposed to be returned by a certain deadline, but you would not know it if you could not read it. Or writing a check...you could not fill it out if you can't read the line descriptions. My Papa mastered that though. He could not read, but he did figure out what went where and he was a master "copier". Even though he could not write either, he did amazing things with his new typewriter. He typed out everything except the long version of the payment only because that part was not on the bill for him to copy. Without reading, you can't even prepare a meal from a recipe; you can't park in the right spot at the store if you do not know what the reserved spots are for. Basically, you are very dependent if you can't read.

It is a wonderful gift to be able to read. I don't take it for granted. I like reading magazines, they are so ideal for me. Lots of short stories that I can get through quickly and move on. When I think back about books I have read, there are two that come to mind.

The first one is "Misty and Me". This I believe was my first book to ever read all the way through. We were taking the train to Florida to see some family friends and I took this book thinking that the long riding over night may be boring. Boy, was I wrong. Those rats kept us quite entertained. I did manage to read the book completely through though. Interesting fact, I was 11 years old!

I don't know if this is the right book image, but the other book I remember reading completely through was about Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins. I know that sounds weird, but it was a very interesting, yet disturbing book. It for sure kept my interest and I read it in like a couple of days. Another interesting fact is I was 21 year old then. So in my first 21 years, I read 2 books completely. That's pretty sad.

If you are wondering how I managed to get through school without reading, I can't answer that. When it came time for book reports, I usually read the first and last chapters of a book and just hoped I could figure out the gist of it to meet the mandatory length needed to turn in the paper. When it came to oral book reports, well why would I read the book if I was not going to do the oral book report part of it. Nope, I usually took zeros on those types of things. I just worked harder at the rest of my assignments to pull my grade back up. I did have one teacher in 12th grade that had mercy on me because I refused to give an oral report and was determined to just take my zero which would have most likely failed me and I would not have graduated. She allowed me to come in and give my report to her only. Anyway, that had nothing to do with reading… :-)

Back to my love of reading. So I checked out a book at the library last night. Why was I at the library you asked if I do not read? Well, Phoebe had to look up 5 of her spelling words in a dictionary and write the pronunciation and page number…..we did not have a dictionary (except the internet version). While I was looking for a dictionary and kept stumbling upon the encyclopedias, she grabbed a book about the Bermuda Triangle.

She wanted to read it instead of doing her assignment. So when we were done with her assignment, we read it. Of course by the time we got to it, she did not want to read it because it looked boring and I had to sell her own it. She realty enjoyed it and I did too.

I ended up selling myself on it and found me a “grown-up” version. I really hope I do stay interested in it enough to read it. It stinks taking a book back to the library to return it, unread, and pay an overdue fee! I plan to write a book report on it too!

Friends!

It had been a while since the girls had had friends over. When a say a while, I mean like a couple of months. That's a long while for us!

This is Jada, Blaine, and Bailee. Bailee and Blaine have too been together since they were babies, like a year old I think. Jada is Bailee's younger sister. Their mom was coming with me to a Ladies Night Out at church, which had childcare so Blaine came along to see the girls.

This is Madison, Blaine, Phoebe, and Catrina. Madison and Blaine are in 5K together. How two girls so sassy and bossy ever make it in one class without killing each other I don't know, but they are the best of friends. Phoebe and Catrina are in the same 2nd grade class. Catrina was home schooled until this year. Her mom is very protective of her. It has been a lot of adjustment for Catrina to attend public school. I have been very proud of Phoebe for including Catrina in things with the other girls. At recess she makes sure Catrina is not left out. Sometime Catrina picks Phoebe to go with her when she has her guidance counselor visits. Catrina came to Phoebe's 8th birthday party and spent the night. That was a huge step for Catrina and we were all very proud of her. We try to get them together some outside of school.

We lucked up that the ice cream truck came by while they we out playing. That was a nice treat!

Another Trip to Hagood Mill

We had such a great time at Hagood Mill the first time, we made plans to return the next month while they were having Kid's Fest. This time Buck was able to go with us.

Grammie and Papa met us there with Katie and Caden. They all had a blast together! It is funny how Katie and Phoebe love to play together, but Phoebe tends to pair off with Caden a lot. Blaine and Caden love to play together, but Blaine tends to pair with Katie because she likes to hang out with the "older" girls.

This gentleman and his wife are always there. She whittles canes...he carves figures/faces in wood and whittles spoons. Not only does he make them - he plays them too! Man, was it a hoot watching him teach Grammie and Papa how to play them. Papa laughed a lot. the guy made fun of them which made it even better. I could have stayed there all day listening to him make fun of them for not doing so well! :)

Really? Don't we get enough exposure to these at home? Do we really need to spend time with more of them here?

This guy was making bows.....so of course Buck (and Papa) hung out here quite a while. Blaine found him quite interesting too.

Rebekah Visit!

One of Phoebe's best friends moved to Texas about 1 1/2 years ago. Phoebe and Rebekah have been friends since they were about 2 years old. They fight like sisters, but they love each other like sisters too. Rebekah came to Atlanta for family and we grabbed the chance to go see her.....and her parents :)

Hagood Mill, Pickens, SC

2011.2.19

We went to Hagood Mill in Pickens to see the waterwheel that drives the mill, making grits and cornmeal. It was really interesting. You can see in the video how it works. They pour the corn in the funnel up top and it makes its way through the machine. When it comes out onto the screens, the first bucket to the right catches the cornmeal because this screen is super fine. The second bucket catches the grits as the screen is a little less dense. Then the last small bucket catches the scraps I guess you would say and they feed these to the animals.

Here are the girls inside the mill.

They have vendors around the land showcasing their products. Everything is handmade. There were ladies quilting and knitting. These hats were made out of wool and mule hair. That was as close as we got to admiring the hats, but had to return them to the display as they were $50 each. She said she had several months in these hats, so she really is not making anything off of them even at that price.

This is at the top of the area where the water is piped in from up the river. Then it flows on this channel to the actual waterwheel. This little boy started following the girls around so we just included him in our pictures. I think his name was Blake.

We went with Papa and Grammie. This is us waiting on Papa....he found someone he knew and grew up with at the bee and honey table. I thought we were going to pass out from hunger waiting on him.

This guy was running the mill machines. He took up with our girls and I felt like we got special treatment. He did a little history lesson with Blaine on quill pens and writing. She got to write her name and then he did it for her in fancy type. He was very talented.

They also had a blacksmith, a lady whittling canes and her husband carved things in different woods as well as makes spoons and played them. It was pretty interesting!

The Dreads

2011.2.15-16
Blaine asked me one night to braid her hair. I thought she meant one big braid, but she wanted little dreads. Blaine never lets me braid her hair so I was excited and willing to do it.

The next morning we took it out and with fear of her hair ever possibly sticking up I figured she would die when she saw it, but she was cool with it. She did say it was too boofie so we tamed it with a little water on top.

Funny thing....Blaine had told her teacher one day that her hair was too boofie so Ms. Woody told her the same thing this morning. It was funny!

Phoebe's 8th Birthday Party Sleepover

2.4-5.2011

Phoebe had 10 friends over for her birthday sleepover. I had sort of planned out the night because you know I try to be structured, but it turned out they had just as much fun playing randoms games together. I was very pleased to see the ones that did not know each other get along so well. Especially, since it rained and my outside activities were eliminated from the "plan".

The meal was breaded chicken with cheesy pasta...aka, chicken nuggets and mac & cheese!

Another unplanned event was the human train. The girls got to playing and pulling each other around by the feet, so Bucky made them "hook" together and pulled them all. They said this was the best part of the party!

After the human train, the girls gathered to paint their picture frames. Everyone was going home with a painted frame with a group picture of the party. They are all very creative!

After painting, they all found their spot for the movie: Sleepover! We fixed popcorn with m&m's and capri suns. The kicker - Phoebe was the first one to go to sleep DURING the movie. How not normal is that? She is always the last one to go to sleep, and while a movie is on? What's that about?

We made room for everyone to sleep. We moved out the desks and file cabinets which made just enough room for all the girls. Notice, you do not see Phoebe? She is up top on the far left, still passed out!

Phoebe's tree house cake! I worked on this thing forever. Bucky engineered the structure and I researched how to work with fondant. I tell you, watching tons of The Cake Boss was a huge help and was my inspiration for even attempting this type of cake. I ran out of time so there were no windows or a door, but everyone got the gist of it: Tree house with grass and a sandbox underneath.

Phoebe was very excited to get some actual gifts to open even though she requested money when asked what she wanted. She was saving up for a DSi!!
